More than just a bike shop.
Our Story
Welcome to Common Wheel Bike Shop, where we are more than just a place to buy bikes.
Back in 1997 the basic concept of bicycle recycling as occupational therapy was developed by Colin Guthrie (GP), Alistair Wilson (Consultant Psychiatrist) and Neil McDonald (cycle enthusiast). In 1999, with the support of Glasgow City Council, we secured our first bike workshop in Maryhill and in 2001 we were granted charitable status and registered as a limited company. We opened our second workshop in Bridgeton in 2006 and in 2015 we converted from a limited company to a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation.
The workshops focus on bike sales, bike repairs, providing volunteering opportunities and build your own bike classes for people managing or recovering from mental illness.
The income from our bike workshops support our Common Wheel’s other activities.
At Common Wheel we run participatory Bike, Music, Visual Art and Climbing workshops where we aim to improve mental wellbeing, increase skills, reduce isolation and challenge stigma.
